His final moments with dad
Constantly haunted by the fear that life in
the military held, he had his hesitations about joining the Nigerian Army but
like a strong pillar, his father stood rigid to support his aspirations of
becoming a soldier.
This is the story of Sunday Owoh, son of
late music icon, Chief (Dr.) Oladipupo Owomoyela fondly called Orlando Owoh who
spoke to SLAPSnHUGS on how his father encouraged him to join the Nigerian
military as well as how he was always afraid of being sent to an untimely
grave.
Speaking on his father’s personality even
within the family, he revealed that incidentally, his father was also a soldier
before he became a musician.
“My dad was like a very big elephant. He
was an achiever and he was a good man. I’m the second son. My father was also a
military man before he later became a musician.”
It was so bad he was always afraid that he
was going to die. “It was not my dad who influenced me to go into the military.
I decided on my own but my father supported it. He said I should go and assured
me that I would come back home. I was always afraid that I might die in war but
my father always assured me. I remember that even when I had my fears that I
might not survive, he always gave me the assurance that I would come back home. I was single before I joined the
military in 1997 so I didn’t have to worry about missing my wife or child. I
got married in 2001.
Recalling his quiet moments with his
father, Sunday said his father usually talked to him about the intrigues of
life not knowing death was just around corner.
“Anytime I was with my father, we used to
talk. He used to tell me a lot about life. He never knew death was so close by.”
How hard should we hug Sunday Owoh or do you think he deserves something else?
